Teenage drivers have the highest rates
What statistics will show you is that teen drivers have the highest fatal accident rate. This doesn’t mean the highest total, because those from 16 to 19 years old make up a very small percentage of all drivers on the road. This is especially true during the school year, when many teens spend all day in the classroom. But, considering how small this age group is, the number of fatal accidents they cause is completely disproportionate.
There are numerous reasons for this, but they usually come back to inexperience. Teenagers simply don’t recognize the risks and aren’t sure how to avoid them. They will do things that are dangerous, such as breaking the speed limit or texting and driving, without fully grasping how great those risks are. This is something that drivers do learn with experience, as they get older, but it means that the teenage age group is always going to pose a significant risk.
